Stop. Let's set aside all this noise in the world. There is really nothing new under the sun.
A week ago we had snow and ice everywhere, with temperatures well below freezing. This morning the south wind blew in warm air that makes it feel like summer. I stood outside in the wan light of sunrise and prayed with my face to the wind. The Lord reminded me:
Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal among you, which comes upon you for your testing, as though some strange thing were happening to you, but to the degree that you share the sufferings of Christ, keep on rejoicing; so that also at the revelation of His glory, you may rejoice with exultation. (1 Peter 4:12-13 NASB 1977)
Yes, we are in for a rough ride. Unlike Peter's audience in his epistle, we are not being specially targeted. The current powers that be are not too specifically anti-Christian because, to be honest, we haven't gotten in their way. It will be rough enough that they are seeking to oppress us along with everyone else. This is not good news, in that believers have failed to distinguish themselves.
Of all times, now is the day to renew your commitment to the Covenant of Christ. This is a good time to reflect how this covenant has distinct behavioral requirements. Not in terms of outcomes, but in terms of the fire of our desire, we should seek a witness that points the world back to the Savior. We do not seek what the rest of the world desires. Right now, the world isn't too sure about that. Believers in the US are not known for a strong Covenant witness.
We are consumable assets for the Kingdom. This life is of no significance other than our witness. In the midst of sorrow, we should stand out as those who bear it well. Glory to the Lord.
