A Different Kind of Censorship

28 June 2024

Well, I had a post all written up for today, but it disappeared. It was saved to my OneDrive account. I checked yesterday because I always reread and edit them one last time before posting. It was gone.

I'm not a paranoid kind of guy, but I'm pretty sure now that my OneDrive account was compromised. I don't normally discuss technology matters on this blog, but in case you didn't know it, OneDrive is not that secure in the first place. The default of having Windows keep all your files in OneDrive leaves you wide open. There are quite a few people out there who know how OneDrive works and can get into accounts they know about.

The missing post was about someone I've mentioned before, and it wasn't friendly. Now, I'm not saying this fellow is guilty himself, but he does have somewhat of a cult following, people who will be quick to defend him in some of the most obscure corners of the Net. They typically show up in numbers on blogs and forums, trying to defend their demigod from blasphemy, as they see it.

While I know it won't be exactly the same, I will try to reconstruct that post for tomorrow. And I will move my documents to a different service for safe access, something more secure. The issue is not that people can see my written stuff -- quite the contrary. I want people to see it. I just don't like having couple of hours' work wiped out like that.

As others have said, for those who promote the gospel message, the biggest threat is not privacy, but that someone would silence or change the message. This was an attack on the message.
