Sometimes it's hard to know where to start. That's why it's always wonderful to have good questions. People who know what questions to ask are a valuable treasure.
The whole premise of Christian Mysticism is having a living direct connection to God. That's the crux of what it means, and that's the reason we use the term -- we want people to have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Only when you have that established can you have a meaningful relationship with other humans and the rest of Creation.
Mysticism means transcending the flesh -- the five senses and reason. It is not a data transfer; communion with the Holy Spirit is all about the Divine Moral Character. You are getting to know a Person; you become personally acquainted with someone who matters in your life. God consistently portrays Himself as our Father.
This is the foundation of our existence, in this world or any other. Our culture has deeply implanted in our conscious minds a resistance to this whole thing. This world tugs at us, nagging and trying to drag us out of the Presence of God. That conditioning makes our flesh a strong enemy of faith. Faith is simply the word for feudal submission to Christ; our flesh pulls toward serving a rival master.
The Bible refers to that rival master as "the god of this world" among other titles. Doesn't that say a lot?
We need to become familiar with the Unseen Realm. Yes, it helps if someone can guide us through some basic facts derived from Scripture, but the whole point is to get you connected to your future Home in Heaven. Everything in this world is derived from events there; nothing originates here.
Keep your eye on that truth.

Undoubtedly pagan, but to varying degrees imperial China and before had the mandate of Heaven and related concepts, and understood that whatever was happening to the nation was an analog of what was happening in their versions of the supernatural domain.
