Here are some things to chew on.
We know that really very few people today have a clue to the biblical mindset. The Hebrew people eventually rejected the outlook God built for them. When Jesus brought it back, His disciples struggled to pick up on it, but eventually seemed to have gotten it. Yet a couple of generations later, Christian leadership again dropped it in the dust and embraced something different.
The mind of Christ was distinctly Hebraic, not rationalist. But it wasn't esoteric froo-froo. It was deeply practical. More to the point, it was very different from what most people assume today is "Christian".
There were people in the Old Testament times whom God hated, and He taught His people to hate them and kill them. Granted, some of them were Nephilim, not purely human. But there were a handful of whole nations God said must be slaughtered. Not even their livestock could be saved. It is silly for modern westerners to make judgments against God's declared will. Hatred of people is not a problem; the problem is whether it is justified by divine revelation.
Ask any nagging lefty about whether they hate someone like Donald Trump. Of course they do. And they hate anyone who dares speak or act in favor of ideals they don't like. All the more so when you walk by convictions they don't like. No one today hates like a lefty, so their claim on the song "Imagine" is nonsense. (And righties are no better, just a different flavor of evil.) Don't even pretend to admire that hymn from Hell.
If you follow Christ, if His Spirit lives in you, the pagan idolatry of that song is immediately offensive. Our senses are attuned to divine revelation, not speculations of mere men. We say the world should most certainly not "live as one". God says this world belongs to Satan, and there are some He has claimed out of it who cannot possibly be united with the others. This comes from God Himself.
We need not justify anything to anyone. Their nagging is a lie from Hell. Stop worrying about their assessment on anything; they represent the Devil. With a few exceptions, we don't bother to hate them, but pity them. If they push too hard against the domain our Lord has given to us, it may be appropriate to defend it with violence. It's not hatred for them, but a deep commitment and love for Christ.
In practice, we recognize the authority of Satan over the things God has placed in his hands. His Spirit in us will provoke us on things God intends to take back from the Devil, and His Word gives us a structure for thinking about that. We recognize that people who cling to the dominion of Satan are beyond our help, aside from trying to get their attention on the moral truth of their choices. We know that our mission among them is to portray a different dominion they can choose.
All their categories of thinking, the very structures of thinking, are inherently wrong. We have a commission from God to intrude on Satan's turf and manifest a totally different way of looking at things -- God's revelation. The whole world is wound up in a structure that rejects that revelation. Anything we say in favor of God's revelation is dissent; we represent allegiance to a foreign domain. We are their enemies. They reject our Savior, so we know there's a conflict. It's unavoidable.
They are loyal to Satan, whether they know it or not. We must reject their viewpoint on everything. Don't let them nag you from their hellish value system. Reject it any way you can. It doesn't matter what they appeal to, because they are wrong before they even start to think about it. They were born wrong. They are devoted to our Enemy; they cannot do good and right, cannot even think it. Don't listen to them.
It doesn't require a hostile demeanor, just a sharp departure in the basic assumptions. Never forget that their mouths are a channel for defilement, both in and out. Nothing they say applies to us, because it is inherently evil. It is sourced in Satan. It is not the words, but the root value system that is wicked. Reject them always.
