The Practice of Law and Grace

10 September 2024

I'm hoping some of you are starting to see a bigger picture.

We don't belong to this world. Once our spirits are awakened, we are eternal beings who belong to another realm. But we are still here. With that awakening comes a mission and purpose: We use this world, and our existence in it, for our Lord's glory. We are aliens riding on this thing, with all the people and stuff they are doing, for something they could never comprehend. We don't belong to it; this is not "us".

We are something external to all of this, though it's rare when those who do belong recognize that. We try to tell them, but unless the Lord makes them hear, it is going to be garbled in reception. Still, it's part of our mission to keep trying to make it clear. We are in the world, but not of it.

God has revealed moral truth that we need to embrace in order to make the most of our eternal future. It can't be fully encoded in human language, only indicated as something for your heart to search. He has also revealed what it takes to make the most of the human situation without eternity. This is encoded in human language as law. It's two different sets of understanding, each from a different perspective. In Christ, we have a foot in both worlds. The real solution is to belong to the higher realm, but that's simply not an option until the Lord touches the folks who belong to this realm. So, we do what we can to fight the lies of Satan by revealing what God says will work for them here.

The most dangerous lie is a half-truth. Western Civilization is a half-truth. Yes, we find some good elements in it, but the core substance is bad: materialism. It's like giving a natural plant artificial metabolic boosters -- it will grow fast and then burn out and collapse in an ugly mess. That's the nature of what Western Civilization does. It has brought untold material wealth to the world, but it's already collapsing and that wealth will be devoured.

We encourage tribal feudalism and a high-trust social structure. It works for our lives under the Covenant. And the Covenant includes a wealth of good law to support all of that, but we must warn people about materialism. Not that we actually expect them to hear our law talk, but we must offer it as the gateway to Eternity. They can't understand Eternity without having an eternal nature, but God's Law is the only way we can play a part in awakening Eternity in other humans.

They are under God's Law. We aren't actually under that law, but it looks like it to most people who don't know the difference between law and grace, between this realm and the one above. We cultivate an appearance of being under that law intentionally for their sakes. When there are apparent contradictions, that's a teachable moment for revealing some element of eternal truth. It's incomprehensible to those who lack the eternal nature, and we know it. It also serves as part of the process when God decides to awaken that eternal nature in anyone.

We are in no position to impose God's Law on anyone. If they do not embrace it for themselves, it will do them little good. I suppose that, in theory, we could impose it in everyone's best interest, but the history of Israel should teach us how hard it is to make it work for any extended period of time. Thus, we impose it only within our own communities as the external frame of reference for moving our thinking above this realm of flesh. Our community emphasizes the ineffable nature of things, so our "law" is the Person of Christ.

There's room for flexing. We expect every member to have their own unique approach to understanding what the covenant requires in detail. We'll talk about it, but the boundaries are rather soft on purpose. Everyone should have their own theology to some degree. No two of us are going to think the same way. What holds us together is a commitment to cooperate among the folks who show up for online gatherings, or make their presence felt in some way, and we agree to tolerate the elders and their peculiarities. That's how it works with Radix Fidem.
