Imprecations and Power

23 October 2024

A time of tribulation means God is more active, enforcing His justice. That means wrath is poured out on sin, ours included. We should be praying for His discipline on our fleshly nature. Start with me, Lord!

But in that same package is His wrath on the sins of those outside the Covenant. Granted, it usually means there will be the appearance of God taking His sweet time about it, but that's just what the flesh sees. If you are eager for your own discipline, then you have standing for imprecatory prayer.

Thus, during times of tribulation -- such as now -- you have every expectation that God will judge those who have been trespassing on your spiritual domain. Be patient when you do this. God gives people enough rope to hang themselves. Keep in mind that some of these fools are vessels of wrath, and God has special plans for them that He may not tell you about. Testing and building your patience is part of the package. But it is broadly accurate that God pays attention to your prayers when you are serious enough to play through His unseen plans, and He does take action when the fruit is ripe.

If the target of your imprecations is someone in political authority, your patience should be as grand as that target's delusions of grandeur. But for people who have little worldly authority, your imprecations will take effect sooner in general terms. The whole point is that you pray for His Covenant to prosper, and for His enemies to be destroyed. He gets to decide the final outcome, so don't let it become personal bitterness. The whole point is redemption of His people, and you never know when someone currently acting a fool is one of His who has gone astray.

It's about redemption and justice, so leave room for that in your calculus.

Still, we should not hesitate to call for justice. As long as we include ourselves in that call for justice, then you should feel encouraged to name those before Him who are working evil. Call down the curses declared in His Word on the sin of those who resist His justice.
