Personality = Theology
25 October 2024
I take the position that your theology is nothing more than a reflection of your character. Whatever else is going on inside your head about theology, the path you take will depend more on your personality than anything else.
Rather than peruse the historical theological paths offered in academia, I believe you would be better served by answering certain personality questions.
- What is the basic reason for theology in the first place? Why does it require so much work?
- Do you need to organize it for yourself, or are you more comfortable embracing someone else's answers? Would you even know why you are comfortable following someone else?
- How do you arrive at the question of authority? How do you decide that someone has sufficient divine leading and expertise to teach you how to approach the task?
- Or, is it more a matter of you and Jesus working together and you let other folks find their own way? At what point do you break off from the path someone else has taken?
- Why does one question matter more than another? How do you decide which questions are the right ones to ask?
- Do you realize how much you rely on questions already chosen and answered for you during your childhood? Do subsequent life events cause you to shift to another path?
- Is it a question of you finding God, or God finding you?
We could go on at length, but the choice of questions become a theology in itself. There are plenty of people who consider such questions frivolous nonsense, which says a lot about their personality type. The issue works both ways.
