Catacomb Resident Blog

Recovering Blog Archives

03 November 2024

If you have been watching, you know I've added blog archives here daily. Day before yesterday I uploaded to the server the entire archive of the former blog site going all the way back to the beginning. That is, the beginning when I moved from Blogger to private hosting.

Over the next week or so I'll continue filling in the blanks of last year's posts made while running WordPress software. So far, I've managed to get an entire month every day. It's a lot of work; I'm seeing HTML code in my sleep. We used a script to convert the database WordPress uses and generate a copy of each post individually. The problem is that WordPress injects a ton of junk code for its display compared to the very simplified format I prefer to use.

That means opening each post in an editor and removing a couple hundred lines of excess code, then putting back in the simpler code I use. Something told me I should have used this format back when I first set up this blog as a mirror to the Substack blog. That would have been the smart move, but we live and learn. Hopefully, in the next few weeks it will all be in place.

As promised, all the links back to posts here from the WordPress period still work the same. It's a kind of boondoggle file system, but I'm keeping it alive because I believe there are already too many broken links on the Internet. This is part of what's taking me so long.

Pray that I keep finding the time to do this until it's all caught up.
