Compassion On Tap

14 October 2023

In some private conversation about the previous post, I was reminded of one of the most difficult lessons for me, and apparently others.

Keep in mind that my writing is targeted at nonconformists. That means eccentric people who aren't typically group joiners. It is hardly the case that God called me to encourage spiritual Lone Rangers. Rather, it is the nonconformist who is already likely in the right place to lead in one way or another. It does not require aggressive, take-charge leadership; it can be rather passive. Most mavericks are already leading by example.

But the maverick role in our society is too easily a self-indulgent one. Having no patience with a struggling brother or sister is a failure to follow Christ. He did most emphatically tell us to get out there and make disciples. That doesn't mean sacrificing your personal style, but it does mean embracing the self-discipline of putting up with sheep who need help. Jesus set the example on that.

You do not choose the Elect; God does. The grounds for exclusion and ostracism are clear in the Bible. Short of that threshold, you are obliged to deal with some of the wackiest and weakest souls that God sends your way. Yes, they can be awfully annoying. Yes, it's work. Still, Christ exemplified the open acceptance of everyone who doesn't threaten the gospel ministry itself. Elitism is from Hell, not Heaven.

Would it surprise you to know that I put up with a few of these lost souls myself? They take up more time than all the rest of you together. I can assure you that every single one of them is quite likely to grow up spiritually to become a miracle, and someone who works miracles in one way or another. Some people had to put up with me, too. The tab has already been paid.

I'm not forgetting what I said about compassion having limits. This is not open-ended; Christ exemplified being selective and explained that not everyone is open to receive. He intentionally drove away people who simply wanted a free ride for their fleshly desires (the Bread of Life incident). He was not willing to lead just anyone and everyone, but rejected earthly kingship. There are some things you simply cannot give. However, for those whom His Father required it of Him, He was ready to pour out His very life.

Open the valve to your compassion. If Christ is in you, so is His compassion. It's on tap, so start serving it out.
